Probably the most consistently prolific band on the Japanese club jazz circuit, indigo jam unit are back with the ninth original studio album, Milestone. Add to that three covers projects and the Common remix album, and that makes thirteen album releases since the beginning of 2006.

Milestone brings everything you might expect from an indigo jam unit album. A two-tone jacket with the artwork consisting of san serif type, nine tracks each with titles that match the mood of the music, a mix of jazzy rhythms, funky beats and cinematic ballads. Yes, all these common ingredients are once again part of the mix, but as always the quartet manage to serve up something tasty.

While most of the albums kick off with an uptempo number, this time round they start with Windscreen Rain, a slower number that evokes a mood of someone driving through the rain at night with a lot to reflect on. It's another one of those tunes with a killer piano melody from Yoshichika Tarue - simple but very effective.

Zeus is an apt title for a tune that starts with some thunderous drums. It's one of those tunes that veers between the jazzy and the funky with the twin drumming characteristic of a number of indigo jam unit tunes. Definitely a tune to be enjoyed live.

Built round a looping bass line, Naja twists and turns over some tight drumming and percussion. This is followed by the high energy sounds of Hunt, centred mainly on the bass and drums with extra detail added from the piano and percussion.

The title track sees the band in swinging jazz mode with the main melody played on piano. A top tune in the very best indigo jam unit tradition. The band then switch on the funk for Trick with its syncopated beats.

Watercolor features a beautiful melody played over an insistent drumbeat, that gradually builds into a fuller sound with the trademark twin drums. Definitely one of the high points on the album.

You wouldn't have an indigo jam unit album without a touch of Latin, and this time round it comes in the form of Corazon, a great dance tune though not as intense as some of their other Latin tunes. The band wind down with Shiosai, a quiet ballad to close out the album.

As always a decent set from one of the most consistent bands on the circuit. A great set of tunes that should go down well with their fans.

Thank you for the album! I searched everywhere for it and couldn't even find it for purchase. Indigo Jam Unit is a band I've discovered last year and can't stop listening to them every single day. Thank you again!
