Although Chet Baker's recordings from late in his life varied dramatically in quality, this series of studio sessions is a high point in his career. After having his trumpet stolen, he plays beautifully with a borrowed flügelhorn throughout most of these songs with a powerful tone, especially on "Baby Breeze" and Hal Galper's intense "This Is the Thing." Baker delivers some strong vocals on the session led by pianist Bobby Scott, though Scott's huge hit "A Taste of Honey" is marred somewhat by his odd honky tonk piano in the background.
This album was recorded in two different sessions in November 1964. One reason why I would consider this essential for Baker fans is he is on flugelhorn. Another is this album's sessions feature ensembles of varying sizes, including a duet with Baker singing backed by Kenny Burrell on guitar. In other words, this is a rich musical experience with Baker as the centerpiece.

Run through the sound samples on this page to hear the full range of music. The sound quality of the album is excellent, but the music - arrangements actually - are eclectic to say the least. More importantly, they show Baker as a versatile artist both on horn and on vocals.

All of the tracks were recorded in NYC for the Limelight label. The November 14 session Features Baker accompanied by Frank Srozier on alto sax and flute, Phil Urso on tenor sax, and backed by a rhythm section comprised of Hal Galper on piano, Michael Fleming on bass and Charlie Rice on drums for tracks 1, 3, 7, 6 and 9. Track 10 is Kenny Burrell on guitar backs Baker's vocals, and tracks 11 and 14 have Baker backed by Bob Scott on piano and Burrell on guitar.

The November 20 session has Baker backed by Bob James on piano, Michael Fleming on bass and Charlie Rice on drums for tracks 8 and 14. For tracks 2 and 5 Baker is backed by Bob Scott on piano and Burrell on guitar, and on tracks 4, 13 and 15 by Bob James on piano, Michael Fleming on bass and Charlie Rice on drums.
