Highlights of The Lift include “Rough Cut,” this track sounds like it should be on the soundtrack of an old spy movie. The frantic sounding drums seem to bring out the best in Coryell and his playing on this song is outstanding; he goes from a simple riff to playing fast trills in a matter of seconds.

“First Day Of Autumn” is a gentle track, featuring nothing but acoustic guitar. As good as Coryell’s band is, it’s nice to hear him with a stripped back sound. It gives the album some variety and acts as a great closer to the record.

The standout song though is “Arena Blues.” Clocking in at close to seven minutes long, this epic track goes in directions that aren’t really touched on elsewhere on the record. The simple, but dark, bass line carries the song, giving Coryell the chance to experiment and improvise.

Having been in the music industry for forty-five years, you could probably forgive Larry Coryell if The Lift had been a bland affair with him treading over old ground. But, thankfully, it isn’t. It’s fresh, exciting and well worth a listen.
