Widely sought-after and among the top recording pianists in the Hollywood musical jungles, Paul Smith is a skilled artist who lends a polished hand to the smoothly arranged chamber jazz group heard on this disc. Organized to showcase the jazz talents of the membership, yet retain a listenable balance between stylized sound and pure jazz, these four men do a highly professional job. Utilizing the voicing developed simultaneously by Paul and George Shearing (tho' perhaps popularized more by George) they voice locked-hands chorded piano with unision guitar figures to achieve their group effect. Within the framework Paul and Tony work out solo figures that heighten and intensify the musical drama. Paul's career centers around his birthplace, California. From a showbusiness family, Paul left home in the care of bandleader-arranger Johnny Richards. In 1942 he played with Ozzie Nelson, leaving him to serve under Ziggy Elman's Army baton. With Les Paul's trio in 1945-47, the Andrew Sisters, then toured with Tommy Dorsey's band from 1947 thru 1948 when he decided to settle in southern California and enter studio work.
