Ruby Braff as fans of Dixie / 'straight' jazz will know was a superb and highly distinctive cornet. Not a particularly showy player but one who had absolute command of his instrument. He could communicate feeling with grace and discipline and so his work never feels over wrought or attention seeking. His tone is warm and his ability to play a melody yet add little embellishments without cluttering up the melodic line make his player who we gladly give our attention because his every utterance is worth the hearing.

This compilation is a true beauty. The tracks originate from the Concorde catalogue date from 1975 to 1996 and feature Ruby in a variety of small group and duet settings, playing standards with the emphasis on swing and having a good time. The music is of course first rate, the sleeve notes loving and informative and the recorded sound very good. Play these well filled discs and I can guarantee a smile will form on the lips and the toes will start to tap. Mention should be made of the guitarists on this set, particularly George Barnes who plays some lovely solos and beautiful supporting chord work. He is a truly great player who deserved to be better known. Favourite tracks? -too many to mention, but `Liza' and `My Shining Hour' particularly caught the ear.
