Emersing their listeners in a lush sound world of overlapped minimalistic structures, where a simple melodic line or groove evolves and devolves and spins a web around itself (musically, like a cat chasing its tail in a most clever way), Don Li capitalizes on rhythmic and metric exploration, using these elements to build texture as a basis for which the songs' harmonies and melodies inhale and exhale in and out, dancing inside and outside of these forces. The honing of repetition in these works allows for the listener to have multiple relationships with the pieces over the course of the song's duration as well as multiple entry points and multiple angles of view. Rather than focusing on the linear, time-based journey of western music, this album embraces core elements of other musical systems which spiral and grow as if in concentric circles, taking the listener into more of an orbit than on a trip from here to there. Something like blending Steve Reich into the instrumental jazz rock arena, accessible even for the Herbie Hancock and 'jam band meets jazz' crowd, Gen is certainly on the edge of addictive.
