    Personnel:
  • Stan Tracey - Piano, Synthesisers
  • John Surman - Baritone Saxophone, Soprano Saxophone, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Recorder, Synthesisers (tracks: 1 to 7)
  • Keith Tippett - Piano (tracks: 8 to 12)

The tracks with Surman are the more immediately appealing, thanks to their wide range of instrumental colours. Surman plays baritone and soprano saxes, bass clarinet and tenor recorder, and both men have occasional and discreet recourse to synthesizers. There is a pleasing variety of mood too, through the propulsive Still on the Run, the charming Summer Hobo and Chalk Blue's wistful balladry. Though many of the pieces are totally improvised, Tracey and Su-man shape them with a sensitive, disciplined touch.
The live two-piano tracks have less sense of overall form, perhaps because Tippett is a more volatile player than Surman, and the joy of "TNT" is, appropriately, in its explosive moment-to-moment interplay. There is excitement aplenty, whirling exchanges of hammered trills and percussive eruptions, but the players seem disinclined to sustain their more delicate interludes. By the end, the barnstorming is sounding more like self-indulgence.
