The music contained in this album is an excellent representation of the styles in which Gate 10
thrives. With mostly original music that characterizes heartbreak and loss, the aftermath of coal fever in
western Appalachia, and the omnipresence of Christ, the music written by the band encompasses many
different ideas and genres. The original instrumental, “Red Brick Road”, was written by our fiddle player
in the middle of his Calculus III class (which gives you a good idea regarding his attention span!). This
fiddle tune was written by a string of notes in the margin of the notes sheet to keep him awake, but he
had no idea how popular the tune would become. It has slowly become a staple in our shows, and we
are certain you will love to listen to it as much as we love to play it! The original gospel song, “He’s
Always There”, has an interesting story. Our fiddle player was sitting at his dining room table, working
on homework and singing “Precious Memories.” All of a sudden, he started singing new words to the
tune of the verse. Now, someone with a fine-tuned ear will realize that the melody of this song is not
that of “Precious Memories”, but it is clear that the melody is derivative of it. The entire song, words
and music, was completely a gift of God, no other way around it! The song “Maitland” is based on the
effects of coal leaving West Virginia, and the consequences of this on a small town in the southern part
of the state. The song “Play Another Round” is about a poor girl who gets cheated on by her man, but
wants to get back with him because he’s so darn attractive (sound like a bad idea? Yes). “Old Friends” is
also based on heartbreak, but from the perspective of someone who has been there before. The main
character has been hurt before and is calling to her old friends: “hurt, heartbreak, and loneliness
welcome home.” The final original, “Lonesome as Can Be”, is about someone who is tired of their
significant other for whatever reason and is leaving and not turning back. “There’s nothing left to keep
them from runnin’”. Intrigued? Guess you’ll have to buy the album to hear the rest! The rest of the
music is made up of original covers of old classics, such as “Wild Bill Jones”, “Many a Mile”, and “You
Don’t Know My Mind.”
