This is Canadian band The Western Swing Authority’s fourth album. Their first album, from 2010, was made up entirely of classic western swing songs. Over the course of their releases they have been adding more and more original songs. On “Big Deal”, there are five original songs, of these, “In The Middle of a Song” is probably my favourite. It’s sung by Stacey Lee Guse alongside by Carolyn Martin and features the sweetest vocals I’ve heard on a new recording this year. The album is named after a great original instrumental (called “Big Deal”, obviously), written by steel player Ed Ringwald and featuring guest fiddle player Buddy Spicher, himself no stranger to western swing, and a second steel guitar player in the person of Bruce Bouton, who has played with Garth Brooks and Ricky Skaggs amongst many others.
