After the Storms is the spiritual successor and continuation of the Austin-based, alt-country collaboration the Storms. The songwriting duo of Nathaniel Earl (Vocals, Guitar, Piano) and Hans Friedel (Guitar, Vocals) were Storms founding members and songwriters. Hans came up with the Storms idea in graduate school at Texas State University after being inspired by local San Marcos alt-country acts Clay Nightingale, the Dead Ringers, and The Lonesome Heroes. These bands blended the soulful songwriting and storyteller lyricism of Townes Van Zandt with accessible Texas country stylings. Along with Hans and Nathaniel, the Storms original line up included Clay Nightingale’s drummer Drew Schatz and Niall Farrell on bass.

With After the Storms, Hans and Nathaniel sought to simultaneously complete unfinished Storms material while expanding upon the original alt-country sounds to include elements of psychedelic country, British pop, and indie rock. Many of the songs on Nadaland were crafted and honed over nearly a decade of studio and performance work. Taking a DIY approach to the music and recording allowed Hans and Nathaniel complete creative control of the songwriting, artwork, and sounds. All songs were recorded in Nathaniel’s home studio in Austin, Texas.

The songs were fueled by the nostalgic appeal of wide open spaces, the freedom of endless roads, and dreams of escaping the repetition and routine of city life. Whether feeling isolated in the manifolds of familiar Austin, or searching for an unattainable American dream in the heartland, the songs capture slices of Hans and Nathaniel’s life. “One Way Trip” was originally a riff Hans created on La Framboise Island, South Dakota, in the flooded Missouri River with songwriter Bethany Amundson. It picked up added lyrical depth through Austin house parties and evolved into its final metaphorical form. “Lottery” was inspired by a Bruce Campbell Army of Darkness poster hanging in Nate’s studio and a thought experiment on whether or not one would stay with their partner if they won the lottery. “Questions And” came from a night Nathaniel spent unsheltered and homeless on a park bench in a driving Texas rainstorm. Countless other moments and stories color these songs.
