2020 is Anthony Braxton’s 75th birthday year. Circumstances have postponed many of the planned events, but circumstances also allowed the release of Duo (Improv) 2017 on June 4th, his birthday. The 8-CD boxset and download album will be available for pre-order starting May 14th from his label New Braxton House Records. Please note that, on June 5th, a day after the official release, Bandcamp will once again be waiving fees to support the artists.
Throughout a six-decade career celebrated for conceptual investigation and compositional innovation, Anthony Braxton has always maintained a special place for free improvisation. In Duo (Improv) 2017, he is joined by Eugene Chadbourne for eight sessions, their distinctive improvisational voices and mastery of instruments on fine display.
In the liner notes, Chadbourne writes, “… we enjoyed each other’s playing immensely, memories lingering of not only the mad-cap combinations and pace but of moments that seemed like jazz standards, except we were making it up as we went along.”
