This 24-track collection follows the career highlights of this much-in-demand session whiz in recordings made between 1927 and 1945 under his own name and working as a featured sideman. With tracks aboard from McKenzie and Condon's Chicagoans, Wingy Manone, Joe Venuti, Eddie Condon, Tommy Dorsey, and Muggsy Spanier, as well as Freeman's trio and Summa Cum Laude Orchestra, Freeman's elegant tenor saxophone adds much sparkle to all of these varied sides. A little heralded figure in jazz history, Freeman left much remarkable work behind and here's a nice chunk of it.
