Dutch alto saxophonist Benjamin Herman is known to many as one of the members of the popular New Cool Collective, but he has also had a fairly long solo career, and the latest instalment in his career as a frontman is Cafe Solo.

This latest album is classic straight ahead jazz, with Herman leading a trio on a "live in the studio" recording of ten standards. The mood is intimate and relaxed throughout and the album, which is a recorded embodiment of the perfect late night jazz set in a tiny jazz club.

The set opens with the light and breezy Namely You, with the bass and drums swinging gently and Herman delivering a delightful performance on alto.

Next up is a version of Monk's Reflections, which most definitely has that laid back late night feel to it, Herman playing some particularly breathy sax that adds to the mood. This is followed by Summertime, the sultry mood of this performance successfully conveying the lethargic mood of hot and humid summer months.

Begin The Beguine kicks off in a fifties bluesy style with a strong bassline and brush drums over which Herman plays some velvety notes. The tempo then picks up on End Of The Affair, driven by a superb performance from the rhythm section.

The last couple of tracks were recorded live, the first a delightful cover of South African saxophonist Winston "Mankunku" Ngozi's Yakhal Inkomo, and the closer a version of the Dexter Gordon tune Soy Califa.

The concept behind Cafe Solo is simple enough ~ a stripped down trio set to really allow Herman to express himself fully on the alto. It's a delight from start to finish and fans in Japan will be lucky enough to be able to catch hime performing at various venues around the country in the coming week. Recommended.
