New York City bassist Andy Galore’s Out and About offers more than meets the eye. Long a staple of the New York City club scene, Galore offers a combination of funky original compositions, and a few select jazz classics. Each is served up by stellar playing from the assembled band.
Out and About kicks off in fine form with Andy Galore’s original composition, “Fingerprints.” The jazz/funk number is a perfect showcase for guitarist Mike Stern, who has a raucous interplay with saxophonist Bob Franceschnini. Galore’s cover of the Charles Mingus classic “Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” not only highlights guitarist Oz Noy’s improvisational skills, but also Andy Galore’s apt arranging and production talents. Jon Davis gets co-arranging credit on the song, as well. This well-travelled classic sounds as fresh and vital as when it was new.
The Eddie Harris composition “Freedom Jazz Dance” moves things along in authoritative fashion, urged along by drummer Gregory Hutchinson’s insistent back beat; Andy Galore’s tight, funky bass; and Jason Lindner’s clavinet-like synthesizer solo work. Oz Noy contributes a distorted, funked-up guitar part to the original composition “Can You Undo This for Me?” Again, Andy Galore’s production and arranging chops shine through, perfectly casting Karel Ruziicka Jr’s tenor saxophone and flute in this restrained urban jazz setting.
The song “Robot 415” serves up Miles Davis in a contemporary, rocking setting propelled by Galore’s bedrock bass and Oz Noy’s gritty guitar. Out and About continues with “23rd Street Blues,” which shifts gears with a textured, almost bebop introduction, then evolves into a modified blues that’s powered by Mike Stern’s guitar. “Chicken and Scotch” serves up some tasty R&B, and it’s all held together by an ultra-funky bass part by Galore, time shifts courtesy of the rhythm section, an emotive piano passage from Max Haymer and otherworldly guitar by Mike Stern.
Andy Galore’s Out and About works on many levels, from its strong compositions to its production and playing.
