Tenor saxophonist Coleman "The Hawk" Hawkins (1904- 1969) was one of the most important instrumental soloists in jazz. The "father of the saxophone" conquered this previously unpopular instrument for jazz and influenced generations after him. He also possessed a strong personality, enormous presence and a pronounced musical adventurousness, so that he always remained stylistically on the cutting edge until the sixties.

From 1924 he was a member of the newly formed Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, which also included Louis Armstrong for a year, and which soon became the first important major jazz ensemble. From 1934 to 39 Hawkins stayed in Europe, where he enjoyed great popularity and many records were made with European and American musicians. Upon his return to New York, he had to defend his throne: students such as Ben Webster, Chu Berry and Buddy Tate had been able to establish themselves during his absence. But with the phenomenal success of his 1939 "Body and Soul" recording, and after a few jam sessions, he was once again the king of the tenor saxophone. Early on, he supported young bebop musicians and encouraged them with engagements in his bands, especially Thelonious Monk. He toured for a long time with the Jazz At The Philharmonic ensembles and recorded many great records when the LP format became established in the mid-fifties.

Feat. Roy Eldrige, Johnny Hodges, Milt Jackson, Kenny Burrell, Sir Charles Thompson, Charlie Shavers, Buck Clayton, Red Garland, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Hank Jones, Ron Carter, Tommy Flanagan, Ray Bryant and Oscar Peterson.
