For vocal fans, a French label with the name L'Art Vocal seems the perfect home for the recordings of Lee Wiley, one of the most beguiling vocal jazz artists in the history of the form. 1931-1940 compiles the complete contents of her '30s discography, from her first ever turn on a record ("Take It from Me," with the Leo Reisman Orchestra) to a pair of 1940 masterpieces with the considerate piano accompanist Jess Stacy ("Down to Steamboat, Tennessee," "Sugar"). Between those are many of the most sublime performances of Wiley's medium-length career, including "A Hundred Years from Today," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and "Time on My Hands."
