Although best known as a member of the legendary Dave Brubeck Quartet, Paul Desmond s importance as an individual cannot be overlooked. A master of the alto saxophone as well as a consummate composer and performer, Desmond was a pivotal figure on the West Coast cool jazz scene. His time with Dave Brubeck produced some of the most critically-acclaimed recordings in history - in particular the magnificent Time Out (Columbia, 1959) - and Desmond himself wrote the standard Take Five , the biggest-selling jazz single ever.
