The second of a pair of recordings by an improvisational quartet led by saxophonist and keyboardist Morten Halle, Halle/Eberson/Sletten/Kjellemyr 2 was recorded in an unusual fashion: Halle recorded an improvised lead or rhythm line by himself, to which guitarist Jon Eberson, bassist Bjorn Kjellemyr, and percussionist Finn Sletten would append their own parts, often without listening to each others' contributions. The resulting 11 pieces sound less like jazz than like the sort of post-minimalist art music created by the likes of England's Gavin Bryars or Belgium's Wim Mertens. (The hypnotic rise and fall of several tracks, especially the opening "Practice Your Breathing, Pt. 1," would sound perfectly in place on Mertens' early-'80s albums as leader of Soft Verdict.) Occasionally, Halle will go off on an overdubbed solo tangent, but most of this 65-minute album consists of meditative, lulling process music. Anthony Braxton and Steve Reich fans take note.
