Even in her native Brazil, Astrud Gilberto was a virtual unknown before she interpreted the bossa nova "The Girl From Ipanema" in 1964 with her cool, breathy voice and made it a world hit. Her unobtrusive, but at the same time magically attractive performance style is the focus of this new compilation. In her own unmistakable style, she interprets not only bossa novas, but also pop hits of the 1960s and 70s as well as jazz standards.

The new LP/CD series "Great Women Of Song" brings color into the record collection, with the iconic female singers of the Verve label and their most important tracks, as an attractively designed, colorful edition. The track selection is competently done and has fans and newcomers alike in its sights. All episodes have been newly remastered. Already available are episodes by Nina Simone, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan, more episodes are in preparation. Her unobtrusive, but at the same time magically attractive performance style is the focus of this new compilation. In her own unmistakable style, she interprets not only Bossa Novas, but also pop hits of the 1960s and 70s as well as jazz standards. Dinah Washington was one of those singers who - as Duke Ellington would have said - simply moved "beyond all categories". Her subtle and inventive performances of jazz standards secured her a place of honor in the jazz pantheon. But as the repertoire of this new compilation shows, she also knew how to captivate her audience with powerful blues, R&B and rock'n'roll.
