The story about Tree House started in the summer of 2012 when the duo Albatrosh received a call which announced that they were picked out to be JazZtipendiat (Jazz Scholarship Recipients) 2013. When the euphoria had calmed down, the duo realized they were commissioned to write the commission work for the Molde International Jazz Festival 2013 in collaboration with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra.

The idea for Tree House was to connect Albatrosh’ music with the core of the TJO sound; colourful, engaging with a great variety in instrumentation and dynamics – a sort of extended Albatrosh.

During the subsequent autumn and spring, pianist Eyolf Dale and saxophonist André Roligheten worked tight and hard with their greatest musical challenge to date; find out why Albatrosh sounds as it does and how to make the orchestra sound like an extended version! Gradually, it became clear how they were to do it, and last summer, the commission work Tree House was performed for the first time for a packed concert hall at the Molde International Jazz Festival.

The work was recorded during the first night performance at the Kulturhuset Plassen in Molde on July 15th 2013, and the recording was mixed by Mike Hartung in April 2014. Tree House consists of 7 compositions which may be described as an extension of Albatrosh. The result is a transparent, open sound picture with great dynamic range – a type of music which is not afraid of the intensely beautiful and rough edged, with ample space for improvisation.

During the concert, visual artist Andreas Paleologos contributed with projected live painting and animation on a screen behind the musicians. An image of a hut in a tree was gradually painted and given life during the concert, thus the title Tree House.

Albatrosh consists of pianist Eyolf Dale (29) and saxophonist André Roligheten (29), two award winning and unique instrumentalists who have made their mark both nationally and internationally with extensive touring and several record releases. Trondheim Jazz Orchestra is among the most important and most creative big jazz ensembles in Norway and has had big projects with national and international celebrities since the start in the year 2000.
