To the extent that the phrase "greatest hits" equates to "highest-charting pop singles," this Nancy Wilson Greatest Hits album, released by the budget division of Capitol Records, is definitive. Not counting a couple of holiday songs, Wilson hit the pop singles charts nine times between 1963 and 1971 on Capitol Records, and every one of those singles is here. They include such performances as Wilson's treatment of "I Want to Be With You" (from the Broadway musical Golden Boy) and her covers of the Stevie Wonder classic "Uptight" and the Frankie Valli standard "Can't Take My Eyes Off You." These are the recordings of a middle-of-the-road '60s pop singer with elements of rock and R&B. Of course, those who consider Wilson an R&B singer will note the omission of her many R&B chart singles that didn't cross over to the pop charts, and those who think of her as a jazz singer will be left out entirely. But that's the dilemma of an artist with a multi-genre appeal. However, this album does capture one aspect of Nancy Wilson's work succinctly.
