Although trumpeter Russell Gunn's first musical love is hip-hop, Young Gunn is (with one exception) a superior hard bop session. In addition to Gunn's warm trumpet and the excellent rhythm section, tenor saxophonist Sam Newsome is a strong asset on four selections. Gunn's originals are very much in the 1960s Blue Note vein, including "East St. Louis," the rapid "D.J.," which is based on "Confirmation," and the up-tempo minor blues "The Message." He also plays quite lyrically on "Fly Me to the Moon," an emotional "Wade in the Water," "You Don't Know What Love Is," and "Pannonica" (a duet with pianist John Hicks). The one departure is "The Concept," which features a rap, but this is only a brief departure from the set of swinging and creative jazz
