An excellent outing, this little-known French CD features the ageless Doc Cheatham when he was a mere 83. Assisted by pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Jimmy Woode and drummer Idris Muhammad, Cheatham is the main star throughout, displaying a strong range, plenty of power and ideas that are both creative and melodic in addition to taking some charming vocals. Highlights include "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Dinah," "I Double Dare You," "Rump Steak Serenade" and "New Orleans." Worth searching for.
