Morgan Freeman's Symphonic Blues Experience is a large-scale musical multimedia project that combines the raw, emotional sound of Delta blues with the grandeur and power of a classical symphony orchestra. The mastermind and producer of the project is the legendary actor Morgan Freeman, a lifelong devoted fan and promoter of the blues in its birthplace, the state of Mississippi. In August 2026, the project's official studio album was released under the Decca Records label, instantly topping the iTunes blues chart in the United States. Work on the record took place at the intersection of two musical worlds: live blues sessions were recorded at the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis, while orchestral parts were tracked at the famous Abbey Road Studios in London. The symphonic scope was brought to the project by the British Chineke! Orchestra — Europe's first majority-Black and ethnically diverse classical ensemble, with all orchestral arrangements and conducting led by Austrian composer Martin Gellner. The live blues rhythm, guitars, drums, and bass were provided by the Ground Zero Blues Club Band from Morgan Freeman's personal club, with key piano and organ parts performed by keyboardist Mark Yacovone. The recording features genre icons and Grammy winners such as Taj Mahal, Keb' Mo', Shemekia Copeland, and Alvin Youngblood Hart. The project itself is designed as a large-scale touring show performed by local symphony orchestras in various cities across the United States. The live performance features a joint execution of classical blues standards, cinematic storytelling with large-screen broadcasts of specially filmed artistic video footage from Clarksdale, and the famous velvety voice of Morgan Freeman, who acts as a virtual narrator between songs, weaving a century of blues history into a single narrative. The musical program spans nearly a century of the genre's evolution and includes tracks such as "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground" (a cover of Blind Willie Johnson's 1927 masterpiece), "Crossroads" (based on the Robert Johnson classic), "Death Letter Blues" featuring Taj Mahal, "The Thrill Is Gone" in memory of B.B. King, "Cadillac Assembly Line" performed by Keb' Mo', and the final track "I Lied To You", a contemporary song from the soundtrack to the movie "Sinners" performed by Keith Johnson.
